Mr. O, who nearly nightly makes me a delightful chocolate beverage, informs me what I have been calling hot chocolate for years is not, in fact, hot chocolate. Apparently, it is hot cocoa.
I’m not sure why, but I associate hot cocoa with Holland. I’ve never been to Holland, though I’m sure it’s lovely. It seems to me that Mr. O is telling me that I have been drinking a Dutch drink for years. Sidebar: maybe the Holland association is due to Dutch-processed cocoa?
Anyway, after alerting me to my years-old misapprehension, Mr. O explained that hot chocolate is made with actual chocolate — as in, shavings — while cocoa is made with cocoa powder. Hrmph.
The beverage Mr. O has been making me is made with both cocoa powder and melted chocolate. So what do we call it?
