A Controversy

hot chocolate?

Mr. O, who nearly nightly makes me a delightful chocolate beverage, informs me what I have been calling hot chocolate for years is not, in fact, hot chocolate. Apparently, it is hot cocoa.

I’m not sure why, but I associate hot cocoa with Holland. I’ve never been to Holland, though I’m sure it’s lovely. It seems to me that Mr. O is telling me that I have been drinking a Dutch drink for years. Sidebar: maybe the Holland association is due to Dutch-processed cocoa?

Anyway, after alerting me to my years-old misapprehension, Mr. O explained that hot chocolate is made with actual chocolate — as in, shavings — while cocoa is made with cocoa powder. Hrmph.

The beverage Mr. O has been making me is made with both cocoa powder and melted chocolate.  So what do we call it?

    hot cochate!
or hot chocoa….i kinda like hot choco. that sounds like a lovely nightly tradition. i might start partaking in that one. except mine probably won’t have a nice, artistic chocolate drizzle on top. i’ll work on that.

  2. Mrs. O says:

You should have seen the other night — the chocolate drizzle was a perfect star. I love hot choco — good call!

This is a terrific debate. Do you mind if I reference it in my blog?

  4. Mrs. O says:

I do not mind, but first you must tell me where to read your blog!!!
