I needed a photo to fill out a newsletter I was making, and so I went for some of the books in my library. Much as I love contemporary novels, they don’t have quite the same flavor, if you will, of older novels.
These four are part of my W. Somerset Maugham collection. I have a thing for Maugham — not a widely known fact — and I haphazardly collect older editions of his works. Mostly this collecting happens through the good offices of my dad, who picks up books for me at estate sales.
If you’re inspired to pick up a Maugham novel, I highly recommend The Razor’s Edge. The Painted Veil is also good, and the film adaptation with Naomi Watts and Edward Norton is visually striking.
